With eight key election asks, our ACT election campaign calls on an elected ACT Government to implement policies that meet the outcomes of the ACT Carers Strategy and will improve carers’ lives, from the introduction of a Carer Recognition Card to the establishment of a purpose-built carer respite centre. Our election asks are about removing barriers, improving mental health outcomes, and ensuring carers are included in the decisions that affect their lives.

Our Key Election Asks:

  1. Carer Recognition Card: A government-issued, non-means-tested card to verify carer status, provide recognition, and foster community connection.
  2. Carer Wellbeing and Respite Hub: Land to build a purpose-built centre for carers offering respite, services, and community support.
  3. Carer Directed Wellbeing and Respite Packages: $500,000 in funding for Carers ACT to distribute carer led and determined respite and wellbeing packages.
  4. Young Carer Mentoring Program: Support for young carers to continue their education and employment while building financial security.
  5. Carer Bereavement Counselling: Specific support for carers exiting their roles to help overcome grief and re-establish identity.
  6. Review of the Mental Health Act: A full review to include carer rights, ensure better care integration and provide for supports that ensure people with mental illness are support to attain and maintain recovery and live full participatory lives.
  7. Integrated Mental Health Centre: A central hub for access to mental health care, navigation, and respite, benefitting carers and those they care for.
  8. Dedicated Mental Health Prevention Funding: A commitment of 20% of the ACT mental health budget to prevention and early intervention.
