Carers Week 2025 is here!
Carers Week 2025 – A Community that Cares for Carers
Carers Week is a national week of celebration, recognition, and awareness for unpaid carers across Australia. In 2025, Carers Week will be held from 12–18 October, with the national theme “You are, know, or will be one” highlighting that everyone will experience caring at some point in their lives.
In the ACT, the local theme is: “A Community that Cares for Carers.”
This theme acknowledges that while unpaid carers make significant contributions across our health, disability, aged care and community systems, the reality is that carers need support too. Research continually shows that carers experience poorer physical and mental health outcomes, financial disadvantage, and social isolation at significantly higher rates than the broader community.
Carers ACT CEO Cain Beckett said:
“Carers Week is a chance for our community to recognise the vital care provided by family and friends here in the ACT. It is also an opportunity for carers to get together, to share experiences and enjoy some fun activities. Too often carers’ efforts go unseen, so this year’s theme reminds us of the importance of being ‘A Community that Cares for Carers’.”
Across Australia, approximately 3 million carers provide unpaid care to family members and friends, including 58,842 carers in the ACT.
Carers ACT will lead the ACT celebrations with a week full of events dedicated to carers. From a carer walk at the Botanic Gardens, a smoking ceremony at Mulligan’s Flat, to a young carer event at Kingpin and our annual carer Cocktail Party, carers will have the chance to connect and feel valued.
In Canberra during Carers Week, you’ll see the city glowing for carers. The National Carillon will be illuminated, while digital billboards across Canberra will carry the message “A Community that Cares for Carers” throughout the region.
Carers Week is a chance to put carers in the spotlight, raise awareness of their impact, and celebrate the diversity and strength of Canberra’s caring community. This Carers Week, we encourage all Canberrans to recognise the carers around them: the friend caring for an elderly parent, the neighbour supporting a partner with disability, the colleague looking after a family member.
Think about what you can do to show your support, check-in, lend a hand or simply let them know you’re there. It is the strength of the community that makes caring sustainable. Only together can we build a Canberra that truly cares for carers.
