21/10/2024: Carers ACT today welcomed a soon to be formed new ACT Government, likely a coalition of the Greens and the Labor Party. “We thank both the ACT Greens and ACT Labor for their commitment to supporting carers during this most recent election campaign,” Carers ACT CEO Lisa Kelly said.

“These commitments mark significant progress and now it’s time to transform these promises into policy. We call on the newly formed Government to swiftly turn their election commitments into tangible policies that will make a difference to the lives of 58,000+ carers across the ACT.”

One of the key commitments supported by both ACT Labor and the ACT Greens is the introduction of a Carer Recognition Card. This will be an invaluable tool in recognising the critical role that carers play in our community, providing them with the acknowledgment and practical support they deserve.

“Additionally, both parties have committed to working with Carers ACT to secure land for a purpose-built Carer Wellbeing and Respite Hub. This facility will provide carers with a dedicated space to rest, recharge, and access essential support services, an initiative that will have a lasting impact on carers’ wellbeing,” Ms Kelly said.

Carers ACT noted the support for a review of the ACT’s Mental Health Act, a much-needed step towards creating a mental health system that works not only for those experiencing mental illness but also for the carers who support them. A positive move towards building a more inclusive and effective mental health framework for Canberra.

Carers ACT also welcomed the recent commitment from the ACT Greens to fund carer-driven wellbeing and respite packages, offering carers the ability to choose how they want to improve their wellbeing. This flexibility will empower carers to take the time and resources they need to continue in their roles with greater resilience.

“We also recognise Labor’s commitment to a Carer Strategy 2nd Action Plan which will address carer bereavement counselling. We look forward to continuing our work with both parties as they form government, to secure support for carers in the ACT,” Ms Kelly added.

“Finally, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks to Emma Davidson for her tireless advocacy and dedication to carers during her time as an MLA. Her commitment to the wellbeing of carers has been instrumental in progressing many of these key initiatives.”
