Carers ACT Launches 2024 Election Campaign

16/09/2024: Carers ACT has launched a grassroots election campaign to advocate for over 58,000 unpaid carers across the territory. With eight key election asks, the campaign calls on the ACT Government to implement policies that meet the outcomes of the ACT Carers Strategy and will improve carers’ lives, from the introduction of a Carer Recognition Card to the establishment of a purpose-built carer respite centre.

The ACT’s carers play a critical role in supporting family members, friends, and the broader community, yet they often do so at great personal cost. This election, Carers ACT is calling for action by all candidates to ensure carers are recognised, valued, and supported, regardless of who takes office.

“The health and wellbeing of carers is critical, not just to those they care for, but to the entire community,” Lisa Kelly, CEO of Carers ACT said. “Our election asks are about removing barriers, improving mental health outcomes, and ensuring carers are included in the decisions that affect their lives. We call on candidates to commit to fulfilling the promise of the ACT Carers Strategy.”

The campaign’s key proposals include:

  • Carer Recognition Card
  • Review of the Mental Health Act
  • Carer Directed Wellbeing and Respite Packages
  • Land for a Carer Wellbeing and Respite Centre
  • Young Carer Mentoring Program
  • Carer Bereavement Counselling
  • Integrated Mental Health Centre
  • Dedicated Mental Health Prevention Funding

“We are calling on people across the political divide to put their differences aside and adopt these asks. Only through the realisation of these vital steps, can we ensure the 58,000 plus carers of the ACT live fulfilling lives,” Ms Kelly said. “We must ensure that the outcomes of the 10 year Carers Strategy continue to be met.”

Carers ACT invites carers and supporters to get involved by registering their interest at www.carersact.org.au/ACTelection24.
