Vision needed to help stop the impact of caring on unpaid carers

Almost half all carers in the ACT on the Carer Payment have been on the payment for 10 years or more. Carers have significantly less employment and education opportunities than their peers and are much more likely to be experiencing poverty as well as physical and mental health challenges. The ABS reports that 58% of carers under 16 have a psychological or psychiatric primary medical condition.

Carers ACT is calling for immediate and significant change in the way carers are cared for in our community.

They are calling for a Canberra community where:

  • 100% of carers are recognised, valued, and included.
  • Being a carer does not negatively impact health, wellbeing, or financial security.
  • Carers have choices about their lives and lifestyles and are fully engaged in the community.

“Being a carer shouldn’t mean a lifelong impact on health, wellbeing, or finances, yet unfortunately too often it does,” Lisa Kelly CEO of Carers ACT said.

“We can change that, but we must do it as a community, we must create a movement where we fundamentally shift our societal attitude to carers and the vital role they play. We must support those organisations, like Carers ACT, who make a difference with resources and funds so we can grow and continue to provide carers with the care they need. This support is not just from governments, it must come from the community as well.”

For 20 years, Shaw Building Group has been part of a growing movement that envisions a Canberra where carers are fully recognised, valued, and included.

Through their partnership with Carers ACT, Shaw Building Group has raised almost $2 million, allowing Carers ACT to provide carers with access to a range of vital programs, including counselling services, respite care, financial assistance, home modifications, and social connection.

“Shaw Building Group saw the need for change 20 years ago and took action. Their long-term commitment has helped us grow as an organisation and allowed us flexibility to respond to the unique needs of carers, when and where it matters most,” Ms Kelly said.

“This is about much more than fundraising, it’s about creating a better Canberra for carers. We are calling on businesses, individuals, and the community to help build on Shaw Building Group’s legacy and help accelerate this movement forward.”
