The Release of the ACT Disability Strategy
Carers ACT Media Release
A shared vision for a community that cares
Carers ACT warmly welcomes the launch of the ACT Disability Strategy, heralding a new era of inclusivity and support for people with disabilities, their families and carers. This strategy, underpinned by the wellbeing framework domains, represents a collective aspiration towards building a more inclusive and accessible community, enriching the lives of not only those directly impacted by disability but also the broader Canberra community.
Ms Lisa Kelly, CEO of Carers ACT expressed her enthusiasm “A Canberra that genuinely recognises, respects, and listens to people with disability and their carers will undoubtedly enhance the wellbeing of all Canberrans.” While there are no specific initiatives for carers within the strategy, the focus on inclusion and improvement to supports for people with disability will also have a positive impact on carers.
The ACT Government’s adoption of a co-design approach to the development of the strategy has been warmly commended. Recognising that people with disability, carers and their families are experts in their own lives we applaud the focus on listening to their invaluable insight and expertise to the development of the strategy and ensuring people with disability are central to the governance of the strategy action plan.
Throughout the consultation period, Carers ACT has been a staunch advocate for the integration of the ACT Disability Strategy with the existing ACT Carers Strategy 2018-28. This alignment, as highlighted in our formal submission promotes a seamless interaction between the two, enhancing support for carers and those they care for.
“We eagerly anticipate the ongoing impact of carers’ experiences on the strategy’s rollout and are optimistic about the practical, positive changes it will bring to the daily lives of people with disability, their carers, and families. The focus of the First Action Plan on housing, neurodivergence and disability awareness training across Government will be welcomed by carers.” Ms Kelly remarked. The strategy’s focus on improving access through enhanced communication mechanisms, liaison positions in community services, housing, and Access Canberra is aimed at improving engagement and ensuring a more inclusive government.
Carers ACT is committed to continued collaboration with the Government and partners within the disability sector. We are poised to support and guide the implementation of significant reforms and initiatives emerging from the recent Royal Commission, NDIS report, and other strategic frameworks within the ACT.
This strategy marks a significant step forward in our collective journey towards a more inclusive and caring society. Carers ACT remains dedicated to ensuring the voices and needs of carers are acknowledged and addressed, fostering a Canberra community where everyone is valued and supported.
