Am I Eligible to Register as a Carer?
If you are an unpaid family or friend carer, who provides regular and sustained care and assistance to a dependent family member or friend without payment for your caring role, then you are entitled to assistance in order to maintain your care relationship.
Your assistance has to:
- Be ongoing, or likely to be ongoing, for at least six months.
- Involve everyday types of activities such as housework, transport, health care, shopping, home maintenance, reading or emotional support.
- Be the ‘primary carer’, that is, the person who provides the most informal assistance. While we understand that family and/or friends may share the care of a person who is aged, has a disability, is living with a mental/chronic illness or is receiving palliative care, only one person can be identified as the primary carer for the purpose of data collection. Alternative or secondary carers are also eligible for support in some instances.
Carers ACT provides Advocacy Services to Foster and Kinship carers. Foster and Kinship carers are only eligible for other services from Carers ACT where the foster/kin child has moderate, severe or profound disabilities and has been living with the Foster or Kinship Carer for more than six months.
