This workshop is for carers of people with mental health conditions and builds on the very popular workshop ‘Caring for someone who doesn’t want to be cared for’ offered in 2018.
Facilitator Louisa Holmes joins Carers ACT again, all the way from Carers WA, to facilitate a more in-depth workshop to enable carers to develop a deeper understanding of the carer dynamic in relation to themselves, and others, and how they can end up stuck in “the pit” with the person they are caring for. We look at how family dynamics triangulate relationships and how the carer manages their feelings. We will look at ways to work towards a healthy sense of self and self-care’.
The model explores three positions of caring (sympathy, empathy and enmeshment), with a focus on seeing the empathic position as a space where the individuated adult self walks alongside the person requiring care, allowing them to see themselves as separate.
Louisa has worked as a counsellor for Carers WA for over four years, after managing an online chat service for Lifeline WA. She is passionate about supporting carers to find a way to help themselves keep their own identity alive and vital as they follow the path of caring for another. She has an existential focus in her work with individuals, couples and families in both her private counselling practice and within Carers WA.
