Caring for Someone Who Doesn’t Want to be Cared For

This is a Forum is for carers who care for someone with complex mental health issues, mental illness or psychosocial disability. This will be a day focusing the carers social and emotional well-being as they ride changing, unpredictable and perplexing behaviours of mental health problems or mental illness.
Understanding the nature of the caring role during times of uncertainty will be explored.
Behaviours associated with a person’s mental illness, or when they may be asking for more independence, could present as not wanting to be cared for. This forum will explore the sometimes-perplexing behaviours of someone with complex mental health problems or illness and the impact on the caring role. Carers will be provided with strategies to support their caring role within this context.

Helping Carers Out of Their Pit: The Carer Dynamic

This workshop will provide carers with the opportunity to consider a carer dynamic called ‘The Pit’, it explores the three positions of caring; sympathy, empathy and enmeshment.
Who am I now? Identity Challenges when caring changes or stops

Carers often describe anxiety, stress, loss and grief as part of ‘losing themselves’ and existing in a different reality.
The carer role can also offer a sense of belonging and purpose in life, engagement in practical and emotional support and a strong identity aligned with individual values.
The session will offer carers methods of adapting their caring role when it changes or ceases.
