Why I Care…..14-20 October is National Carers Week, a time to recognise and support the significant contribution Australia’s 2.7 million unpaid carers (and Canberra’s 50,000 carers) make to the community and to encourage the community and government to better support them.
This year’s theme is ‘Why I Care’.
If you’re a carer we’d love to hear your story – tell us why you care! If you’re not a carer take a moment to tell us why you support and appreciate unpaid carers. You can add your comments on the Carers Australia website story wall here. Knowing someone acknowledges their selfless work and wants to help can make a huge difference to carers – so make that difference by telling us why you care!
Our national ambassadors this year are our Olympic and World Champion swimmers Cate and Bronte Campbell, who help care for their severely disabled younger brother Hamish who has cerebral palsy. Look out for our ads with these sisters in October.
What’s Happening Around Canberra During Carers Week?
Fancy a game of golf?
11.30am, 11 October 2018
Strategic Partners is a consulting firm in Canberra who are running a golf day with the proceeds raised coming to Carers ACT. They have included space for eight carers to play and get a chance to meet with others in the community including members of the Brumbies. Registrations from 11.30am, 11 October. If you would like to participate, please email us.
Launch of the ACT Carer Strategy – Action Plan
12pm, 16 October 2018
You may be aware that a group of carers and others have been working very hard to develop the first three-year action plan under the new ACT Carers Strategy. The plan has now been finalised and is with the Ministers for endorsement. We will be launching the action plan as part of Carers Week on 16 October at 12pm. Please mark this in your diary and we will send out more information soon.
Have Breakfast With Our Politicians
7.30am, 17 October 2018
Each year during Carers Week, Carers Australia hosts an event at Parliament House which aims to attract as many politicians as possible to gather and meet with carers and carer supporters. This year they are hoping that a breakfast event will attract more politicians. Whilst the timing is not ideal for many carers, there may be some who are available or interested in attending. Assistance with transport can be provided. If you are interested in attending please email us.
Free Dental Check Ups
From 8am, 20 October
Maven Dental Clinics around Australia will be offering unpaid carers a free dental exam, x-rays and clean as well as advice on how to fit good oral health care into their busy lives. This is their way of saying ‘thank you’ for everything carers do. You can book at Maven Dental Belconnen (Ph 6251 5454) or Wanniassa Dental Surgery (Ph 6231 0001). Limited places. Book early! (Apologies to our NSW carers – there are no Southern NSW clinics).
We have a book Border Songs by Jim Lynch up for grabs – a moving, funny and witty novel about family life as seen through the eyes of a 23 year old man with autism and severe dyslexia.
To go in the draw, just email us or ring 6296 9933 with tips on what others can do to make your caring role a little easier. How would YOU like people to help you? We’ll then share this advice to hopefully make things easier for you and other carers.
Entries close 30 September 2018. Good luck!
